From his earliest years, Piyush was the kid who couldn’t leave things alone. Every summer vacation became an unofficial science lab — fixing computers, dismantling televisions, building a solar cooker from scratch, wiring together an electric generator, constructing a periscope just to see the world from a different angle.

That same instinct took him all the way to Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Rocket Science. But even rocket science couldn’t contain his ambitions. When it came time to choose a path, Piyush had every reason to take the expected one — a six-figure salary, a prestigious title, a seat at a well-funded company. His peers took that road. He chose a different one.

Instead, he joined a small Maryland startup with just five employees and a big dream. For three years, he poured himself into it — not just as an engineer, but as a builder across product, marketing, and operations. He wore every hat, solved every problem, and watched that startup grow into a $40 million company with 60 people.

It was during those years — one afternoon in June 2008 — that he went to fix a broken point-of-sale system in a DC restaurant. There, he met Vikram Seth, who was washing dishes while quietly building his future. Two strangers, one afternoon, one cash register between them. They became good friends, but never imagined they would one day build a company together.

It was also in those years that something larger became clear: too many brilliant ideas — from startups, nonprofits, and growing companies — were struggling to become real because they lacked the right technical partner. Someone who understood not just the code, but the mission behind it.

So in 2010, Piyush left his job and founded Simpalm.

Years later, in 2015, Vikram walked back into his life — not as a stranger this time, but as a partner. Vikram Seth joined Simpalm and built its staffing practice from the ground up. What started as two strangers over a broken cash register had quietly become the foundation of something neither of them planned.

Piyush still shows up every day with the same curiosity he had as a kid, dismantling things just to build them back better. Because for him, technology has never just been a career. It’s always been a calling — the same calling that once sent him to fix a cash register in a DC kitchen, and ended up changing two lives instead of one.
